The Writing (and Pictures) on the Wall

Creating a Scientific Communication Display

UMaine Coordinated Operating Research Entities (CORE) requested a display of the top three finalists of last spring’s microscopy imaging contest for the hallway between their administrative offices. Rather than contracting with an outside business to create and install the display, the IMRC Center, which is affiliated with CORE, was able to make this vision come to life.

Graduate assistant Samantha Grimwood led the project, executing the design and fabrication of vinyl lettering for direct application to the wall, and high-quality large-format prints that take the details of each magnification image and make them even larger and more distinct.

The objective of the imaging contest is to bring together students from a variety of disciplines to see how CORE assets may be used in unexpected ways. Additionally, as students prepare to enter the world beyond UMaine, the process of selecting and captioning images for the contest gives them a concrete opportunity to practice communicating their work to a broad audience.

The wall display is intended to make CORE’s presence on campus more visible to those visiting the Engineering and Science Research Building, and to encourage more students to participate in the annual contest.
